We're (close to) getting a microbrewery!

I missed this bit of news in the Post, but it was pointed out on the Takoma neighbhorhood listserv:

Dave Coleman, president of 3 Stars Brewing Co. said he is close to signing a lease on a warehouse "on the D.C. side of Takoma Park." In the meantime, he and partner Mike McGarvey have been testing recipes on a three-gallon pilot brewery in McGarvey's home. Coleman says he hopes to have a 20-barrel brew house operational by August, with his first offering a hoppy, American-style India pale ale to be called District IPA.

There's some speculation as to where in Takoma this warehouse is exactly. Ideas?

  1. If it's really a warehouse and I had to guess, I would say in the "industrial park" that is east of the train tracks but west of North Capitol. Like 6500 Chillum Pl NW. Any word on whether there will be a brew pub associated with it?

It looks like something new is going in next to Torchinsky's Funeral Home on Cedar? Any idea what that is goign to be?

  2. I'm asking around about the building next to Torchinsky's (are you referring to the old National Children's Center building, or something else?).

  3. Yes, the old National Children's Center Building. They were doing some work on the exterior of that building last Friday.

  4. A new store will be opening in the location next to Torchinsky's at 232 Carroll St, NW, called Trohv. It will be furniture, home decor, accessories. It is the second store by the owners of Red Tree in Baltimore. Check their website: www.redtreebaltimore.com

  5. They should move into the old Takoma Theater at 4th and Butternut.

  6. @ cj_atc: Imagine the chagrin of the Takoma Theater Conservancy if that were the case!

The theater's owner, on the other hand, just might be into it, if he and the brewers could reach an agreement on a price.

  7. I think the issue that 3 Star will have is zoning. Apparently the amount of area in DC city limits that has the appropriate zoning for a brewery is limited (and mostly in outer NE). That's why I think the space they are talking about might be in the "industrial park" on Chillum.
