I live close to the Safeway also, but am excited for another option. Since WalMart announced their plans, I have seen a definite uptick in service, variety and quality at Safeway, especially a lot more attention from management. Ave.

However, what the hell is this "bringing fresh groceries to underserved areas" crap? As if Brightwood is the South Bronx or something ...

The Swillmart site (former Curtis Chevrolet dealership) is not even a mile from a full-service Safeway on Ga. and Piney Branch. I live about a block from that Safeway, and it does have some issues, but the fact is that it is a big supermarket. People may be underserved in terms of choice (Safeway or nothing), but I wouldn't call Brightwood a food desert, if a definition of a food desert is an area that lacks a full service grocery store. Brightwood doesn't. People might not like the Safeway, and people might wish for a Wegman's or Harris Teeter on the Walter Reed Site (I do!), but the presence of the Safeway negates the Walmart propaganda that people in Brightwood have no access at all to fresh groceries.eam531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8419843266836212215.post-22249887330803926232012-06-03T22:20:34.344-04:002012-06-03T22:20:34.344-04:00i sure as hell hope something will trip them up.i sure as hell hope something will trip them up.IMGophhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10389077782536090328noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8419843266836212215.post-58185687726761288182012-06-01T14:45:12.298-04:002012-06-01T14:45:12.298-04:00The fryer is working - I was there yesterday :)The fryer is working - I was there yesterday :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8419843266836212215.post-44040163621704936972012-05-24T11:39:14.473-04:002012-05-24T11:39:14.473-04:00Ledo Pizza must remain open for the sake of my men...Ledo Pizza must remain open for the sake of my mental health.John Grunwellhttp://mahajohn.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8419843266836212215.post-88668861956090186722012-05-21T12:13:22.878-04:002012-05-21T12:13:22.878-04:00Went there on Saturday, salivating for a nice hot ...Went there on Saturday, salivating for a nice hot Horace and Dickies fish sandwich and there was a sign on the door that the frish fryer was being prepared. There was no evidence of robbery in the other cases either, was there? Crazy that a 19 year old would be doing this on his own (ie, not a group of kids having "fun") with no attempts at robbery. Sad situation all around, but great work by MPD on this one.

The neighborhood violence in general doesn't spook me that much, since it feels targeted in a way that doesn't usually affect me (I don't buy drugs, run with a crew or stay out after midnight walking GA ave with an ipod in my ears), but the things like this that feel totally random are always troubling. They were very open to suggestions from customers about what products to carry. However, I did not like that they moved all of the liquor behind the counter. I was also underwhelmed at the beer selection. I will probably buy my liquor there to support the neighborhood, but so far I liked the old iteration better.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8419843266836212215.post-36350688471534643952012-03-13T21:10:46.009-04:002012-03-13T21:10:46.009-04:00This is great news.
